Harvey L. Poppel

The Garden Club of Palm Beach hosted Harvey Poppel, Palm Beach Civic Association Director and Chairperson of the PBCA Water Resources Committee, for his presentation about water conservation, the new Town ordinances he helped create, and on Advanced Irrigation Systems (AIS). The event was the first meeting of the season for the Garden Club at the Pine Jog Environmental Center.

Highlights of his presentation were:

  • Palm Beachers can save over a billion gallons of water a year (half of the water use in town) if everyone adopts advanced irrigation systems (AIS).
  • Property owners can save 25-50% on their water bill with AIS. 40-80% using all the conservation methods Mr. Poppel described.
  • If property owners register their AIS systems with the Town, irrigation does not have to follow the day-of-the-week watering schedule.  Owners can water when their landscaping needs it.
  • AIS systems promote healthier and richer looking landscaping.
  • The cost of an AIS system ($300 - $800+ depending on the size of the property) pays for itself in 6 to 18 months.
