The Civic Association held it's first Community Forum of the season on Undergrounding the town's wired utilities.

Underground Forum CrowdMore than 160 attended the event which was held at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea on Monday morning and featured speakers:

  • Tom Bradford, Town Manager
  • Jeff Smith, Chairman of the town's advisory Underground Utilities Task Force
  • Paul Brazil, Town Director of Public Works

Key Facts from the Presentation

  • Estimated Cost: $90 million
  • Town voters must approve a bond issue in a March 15 referendum.
  • Average cost to property owner: $550 annual assessment over a period of 30 years.
  • If you paid, or are paying for, undergrounding already, you won't be charged the town-wide assessment.
  • If referendum approved construction would start May, 2017 and take 6-10 years to complete.
  • Current plan will start multiple construction crews in 2 different areas of town to minimize traffic disruption.
  • Lines buried in the street with horizontal boring and connected to property via the front yard.
  • An above ground transformer will be located on the property of 1 per 4 houses.
