At Wednesday’s Town Council meeting, Councilman Richard Kleid said people opposed to the proposed town-wide burial of utility lines are suggesting that lines buried in flood-prone areas are not reliable. So he asked John Lehr, manager of overhead to underground conversion for Florida Power and Light if lines buried on the barrier island would be as reliable as those buried on the mainland.

“Whether it’s on the mainland or the barrier island, the more that (power) circuit is placed underground, the more reliable our data shows” it will be, Lehr said.

Underground utilities are 3.5 times more reliable than overhead lines.

All power, cable, and telephone will be underground and upgraded for a TOTALLY new system.  Cable and telephone will be fiberoptic.  Better/faster wi-fi for your house and where cellphone coverage is weak, new cell-antennas will be integrated invisibly inside the new/upgraded streetlights.

Plus a new emplty conduit will be buried for future technologies and leverage with the cable and telephone companies.

With underground utilities, there is a much greater chance the power will stay on during a major storm, thus keeping your air conditioning running. If we lose power for a day or longer, mold starts to grow inside our homes - putting them at risk of being destroyed from the inside out.
