Okeechobee Boulevard closure in May will hurt travelers on and off the island.
In addition to having to navigate around numerous in-town construction projects — including replacement of some water mains; sidewalk and road work around Town Hall and Florida Public Utilities’ replacement of 4 miles of gas lines — drivers also will have to deal with a complete closure of Okeechobee Boulevard at the Florida East Coast Railway tracks for four days next month.
Okeechobee is a major artery into Palm Beach, particularly with the Flagler Memorial Bridge down to two drive lanes while its replacement is being constructed.
Mayor Gail Coniglio said Saturday the closure will be a traffic catastrophe, but it is something over which the town has no control.
