header inlet and port

On October 1, 2015 Congress members Lois Frankel, Alcee Hastings, and Ted Deutch asked Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army to withhold funding for the Port of Palm Beach expansion and Intracoastal and inlet deepening and widening project. See the letter below.

Congresswoman Lois Frankel has supported this position since the Town of Palm Beach, Civic Association, and the Save Our Inlet Coalition brought the issues to her attention.

Congress Delegation To Army CorpsContents of the letter below:

The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy
Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works)
108 Army Pentagon, Room 3E446
Washington DC 20310-0108

Dear Secretary Darcy:

As you develop the FY 2017 Budget for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, we would like to bring to your attention our concerns with the Lake Worth Inlet, Palm beach Harbor, Navigation Improvements Project (hereby referred to as the "Port of PB Expansion Project"). H.R. 3080, the Water Resources Reform and Development Act, included as one of 34 authorized projects, the Port of PB Expansion Project, dure to the timely completion of an Army Corps Chief's Report.

This port shares the Lake Worth Inlet with a popular recreational area known as Peanut Island, Riviera Beach, Palm Beach Shores, West Palm Beach, and the Towns of Palm Beach. Due to this proximity and feared damage to the environment, marine life, and dramatic change in the character of the water way, the Port of PB Expansion Project is mired in controversy and a threatened lawsuit.

As a result of these issues, we respectfully request that federal funding for the Preconstruction, Engineering and Design and Construction phases of the Port of PB Expansion Project be temporarily withheld from this and future Army Corps budgets unless and until there is clear community consensus of approval.

Thank you for your careful consideration of our request.

Sincerely,

Lois Frankel
Member of Congress

Alcee L. Hastings

Theodore E. Deutch
