Gov. Scott says Flagler Bridge will remain open during construction

Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio said late Saturday the governor’s office alerted her that the Florida Department of Transportation has changed its plans to close the deteriorating 78-year-old span in early April while it builds a $94.2 million replacement span.
“It certainly is great news and we’ll celebrate as details come forward,” Coniglio said.

Mayor Coniglio said developer Llwyd Ecclestone, director of the Palm Beach Civic Association, was instrumental in getting state officials to reconsider the closing.

A notice on the association’s web site late Saturday said: “Governor Rick Scott reports to Palm Beach Mayor Gail Coniglio and Palm Beach Civic Association Director Llwyd Ecclestone that FDOT will repair the existing Flagler Bridge rather than close it. The bridge may be closed for several months but otherwise will remain open during new bridge construction.”
