header bridge alert

The westbound lane of Southern Boulevard Bridge will be closed nightly from 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Monday, Oct. 23, until Friday, Oct. 27.

Flaggers will maintain two-way traffic in the eastbound lane – one direction at a time – as crews install traffic signals, a concrete barrier wall at the northeast corner of Southern Boulevard and Flagler Drive and restripe a portion of the bridge and intersection. In addition, there will be intermittent lane closures at Flagler Drive and Southern Boulevard with flaggers directing traffic during this time.

At the end of the week of October 23, traffic will be shifted to the west on Flagler Drive north of Southern Boulevard. This will eliminate the dedicated left-turn lane from southbound Flagler Drive to eastbound Southern Boulevard. Southbound traffic on Flagler Drive will be able to make left turns from the southbound travel lane.

The Southern Boulevard (SR 80) Bridges Replacement Project includes replacing the existing bascule (draw) bridge and tide relief bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway (ICWW) and Lake Worth Lagoon between the Town of Palm Beach and the City of West Palm Beach. The project limits are between Washington Road in West Palm Beach and State Road A1A/South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach. New decorative lighting, pedestrian features, traffic signals, signage and drainage are included. A temporary bridge will be built north of the existing bridge to maintain traffic while the replacement bascule bridge is under construction. Active construction began April 3, 2017, and will last until early 2021. The estimated construction cost is $93 million.
