WEST PALM BEACH -- Just how to make Okeechobee, between Australian Avenue and the Intracoastal Waterway, less scary was the point of a meeting Monday at the convention center, where about 200 city, county and state officials gathered. Palm Beach's Mayor Gail Coniglio was a host at the meeting. The Civic Association helped underwrite the summit.

They discussed how to make that stretch of road, which handles an estimated 40,000 cars daily, more accommodating to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Mayor, Palm Beachers Concerned About Growing Okeechobee Blvd. Gridlock
Mayor Gail Coniglio and Palm Beach residents say they want to work with officials in West Palm Beach, as well as the state and county, and find ways to fix the worsening traffic gridlock on Okeechobee Boulevard.

Government and planning officials gathered at a public forum Monday to talk about the growing congestion on the boulevard, which is a vital transportation link between the Royal Park Bridge, downtown West Palm Beach and Interstate 95.

“The corridor has become gridlocked,” Mrs. Coniglio said. “We need to work together to find solutions.”
