Kunkel Awards were presented by Chairman Will Matthews, Anne Keresey, and Paul Leone to recipients: John Blades, Dr. Rebecca van der Bogert.
The Raymond J. Kunkel Award was created in 1976 in memory of the late Civic Association Director and Chairman Raymond J. Kunkel. It is given each year to individuals or organizations that render heroic or meritorious service to the Town of Palm Beach.
“This year, we have two Kunkel Award recipients.” said Mr. Matthews. “Both have impacted the Town in significant ways, one through her work with our children and the other by his contribution to the history and the legacy of our community. Both are retiring after stellar careers in Palm Beach.
Mr. Blades is retiring after 21 years as the Executive Director of the Flagler Museum and Dr. van der Bogert is retiring after 7 years as the Head of the Palm Beach Day Academy.
On accepting his Kunkel Award Mr. Blades said, “Thousands have helped the Flagler Museum become what it has become over the last 20 years. I accept this great honor on behalf of all of you.”
While accepting her Kunkel Award, Dr. van der Bogert said, “I don’t think you can have a great school without a great town. The intelligence, talent, and above all the willingness to share their talent – no other community has the adult role models that we have for our children.”
