Whitefly management, education in the offing with UF-organized working group

Whiteflies have become a major issue in South Florida with at least three to four different species. Of particular concern to Palm Beach residents are the ficus, rugose spiraling and silverleaf whiteflies. Many residents have noticed plants losing leaves, turning yellow or covered with a sticky material called honeydew. In many cases, this honeydew supports the growth of a fungus called sooty mold. The leaves, walkways, or even cars and outside furniture become covered with the sticky material and sometimes wax from the insects. Whiteflies can be controlled with pesticides and with the help of other organisms. The town manager and other Town of Palm Beach officials are addressing the issue. They have taken a unique and proactive approach. They’ve asked state and federal scientists to address the issue, which has resulted in the establishment of a Whitefly Working Group. Council gives initial approval to ordinance designed to combat whitefly infestation

Whitefly damaged hedgeThe Town Council acted Tuesday to beat back a pervasive whitefly infestation that officials say is destroying the town’s hedges, trees and other vegetation.

The council unanimously approved an amendment to the town’s public-nuisance ordinance that would make it illegal for property owners to retain trees or other greenery that is dead, dying or defoliated, and illegal to retain vegetation infested with whiteflies or other exotic pests.

The ordinance would take effect following a second council vote of approval at its meeting on Jan. 10, Town Attorney John Randolph said.
